BURLINGAME—The Burlingame Bearcats continued their undefeated season with a 72-46 win over Solomon Tuesday night in Burlingame. The game include 16 total touchdowns, and was the Bearcats’ first game of the season not ended by the 45-point mercy rule.

“I thought Solomon played extremely well,” said Jeff Slater, Burlingame head coach. “They came out the gate and grabbed momentum quickly with the big play, it had our kids a little shocked, and that put us on our heals early.”

After trailing 8-6 in the first quarter, Bearcats took a stead lead over the Gorillas, leading 14-8 after the first quarter and 30-16 at the half. Burlingame ended the second quarter on a last-second, 22-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Sporing to Jake Thompson.

“With that early trick play, I really thought it had our defense thinking the rest of the night and took away our aggressiveness,” Slater said. “They came back at us with a few more trick plays and were able to capitalize on them.”

Burlingame continued the momentum into the second half, doubling their score, as well as their lead over Solomon. The teams cruised through the final frame with two more touchdowns apiece as Burlingame reeled in the 26-point win.

“We were able to control the line of scrimmage up front and do what we wanted,” Slater said. “Dalton Sporing really put us on his back and helped lead the team, he proved in that game why he is on of the best quarterbacks in the state. I also thought Dominic Buterakos and Seth Greenwood did a nice job in our run game, Dominic was able to use his speed and get to the outside, and Greenwood did a nice job in pass protection.”

Sporing led the Bearcats, completing 7 of 15 passes for 135 yards and 4 touchdowns and two conversions; and rushing for 159 yards on 18 carries for 4 touchdowns and 3 conversions.

“Defensively, our kids were frustrated but we still came away with some defensive touchdowns and turnovers to really grab the momentum and keep them at arms length,” Slater said.

Seth Greenwoork led the Bearcats with 11 tackles and a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown; Tristan Lee had 10 tackles, including 4 quarterback hurries; Thompson had 9 tackles; Kosta Buterakos had a 43-yard interception return for a touchdown; and Colton Noonan had an interception.

“That game is exactly what we needed,” Slater said. “We hadn’t played a full game all year, we saw some adversity early, and we were able to overcome all those things and get the win.”

The Bearcats (10-0) will continued the season Saturday with regionals Saturday at St. Paul (9-1).

“A lot of work goes into being 10-0, so I am extremely proud of our kids and coaches,” Slater said. “St. Paul is another tough team. It should be an exciting game. I know our kids will be ready.”
